Why foreigners can't get a regular jobs in Japan!? Why almost all foreigners are english teachers in japan???
Why foreigners can't get a regular jobs in Japan!? I am sure many foreigners have their skills such as engineering, accounting, designing, etc... Is it because of linguistic barrier!? Is it because of Sakoku!? (During the Edo era, Japan closed itself off from the outside world) Is it because of visa situation!? Is it because of body smell!? I don't know why, but japan should accept more foreign workers!!! Otherwise japan economic won't be able to last in the world. Let's see how Ms. Abe will take an action with this matter. |

Re: Why foreigners can't get a regular jobs in Japan!? Let's see. That's a great question. I have a combined time of about four years in Japan, but I am no longer in Japan. I have an MBA and an engineering degree. The only jobs I ever really got were teaching jobs. Since I worked a lot of different hours I never took a class in Japanese. However, I was able to teach myself about 1500 Kanji and acquire a Japan Proficiency Test level 2 by my own guess.
I would think that the Japanese government would encourage people who have lived in Japan and show a real interest in the country, its culture and people to work for Japanese companie. Maybe Japanese companies could start to reach out to these type of people too. - I know there are a number of foreigners who do work there in companies, but more often than not they are Chinese or Korean and came to Japan originally to study. That is an advantage! Or if you think it's a good idea, you could encourage and help people and show them how to write Japanese style resumes and apply to companies. I will note that I would love to have stayed in Japan, but under different conditions.-- Don't take my post as complaining. It was because I didn't try to find another job that made it impossible for me to get one. Hehe! But Great Question. |

Re: Why foreigners can't get a regular jobs in Japan!? There are a few reasons. One is that the language barrier limits the kind and number of jobs we can do. Some people learn Japanese, but it takes years to learn enough to work effectively in Japanese. Most gaijin only stay here for a year or two, so they usually work in an English environment.
A lot of gaijin also come here for a sort of working holiday, to just spend a year or two doing something different before they return home. They're not interested in working hard to build their careers while they're here. Eikaiwa is easier, so they can put more effort into having fun. Other gaijin come here with a university degree in a field that's not easily marketable (sociology, psychology, English literature, etc.). They have to learn another skill before they can change jobs. There are a lot of differences in workplace culture between the West and Japan. I don't want to work in a traditional Japanese workplace because the culture is not natural to me. If I work for a Japanese company, it has to be a young innovative company with a less traditional culture. These are all reasons that I can see. Oh, don't mention body odor and I won't mention your shortcomings.

Re: Why foreigners can't get a regular jobs in Japan!? Good question! I have been to the Gaikokujin Koyou Center (Employment Center for Foreigners) and asked them the same question. Their answer was pretty straight forward. They said the government wanted to keep the jobs for the local people, and they would only give visas to the foreigners to do something that local people couldn't do. So, even though you can speak perfect Japanese and apply for a regular office job, the chance is that the company will want to hire you, but the government will refuse to give you the visa. Therefore, most foreigners here are either English teachers or engineers because these are the jobs that they have trouble finding local people to do.

Re: Why foreigners can't get a regular jobs in Japan!? I think this is a great topic to talk.
here is a unique example. One of my friend who speak a very good japanese went to the public employment security office and found a regular job. The public employment security office is for japanese, and they don't do anything for foreigners. but my friend went there, and he was refused at the first time because they had never gave service to foreigners. but he went again, and talked to the differnt staff. finally, he could treat my friend just like other japanese. and he got a job! they helped your resume, and made an appointment for interview, etc...he got a regular service. I think this is a good example. If you go to the Employment Center for Foreigners, it's hard to get a regular job, i guess. I think, more and more japanese companies will hire foreigners in the near future. Japanese government is not that stupid, so i am sure they know if Japan wants to keep developing economy in the world, they have to hire more skilled people from overseas. |

Re: Why foreigners can't get a regular jobs in Japan!? I'm playing concerts, doing photography and teaching piano here. A friend of mine owns a micro brewery, another guy I know is a pottery specialist, another one does the computer systems for a bank. We are not all English teachers.
