Face of the Month
::::No.12::::

Q1. What is your name?

A. bRoTheRmAn aka Jody Rusch

Q2. Where are you originally from?

A. Johannesburg, South Africa.

Q3. How long have you been in Japan?

A. Since March 2006, so about 7 months.

Q4. What do you do in Japan? and what were you doing before you came to Japan?

A. Before coming to Japan, I spent two years in England. My occupation is physiotherapy and my passion is music. So I spent the two years travelling to various parts of England, working as a locum physiotherapist while DJing and writing and recording my latest album: bRoTheRmAn & Groove Assassins - Incognito. In Japan, I continue to DJ and have also started an event management company with my mate Woody, called Zulu Samurai (www.zulu-samurai.com). I have been working hard on my more dance floor focused tracks and have a couple of signings coming out on vinyl in the next few months. I hope to start work on a new album soon, that will feature collaborations with other musicians in the Osaka scene as well as some great musicians from South Africa and England.

Q5. What are you into at the moment?

A. I am into Thom Yorke - Eraser, Twin Peaks - Season 2, John Irving and Tom Robbins, Batman, Cirez D, Lotte Almond Chocolate Crisp, Ableton Live, Analogue Synths, peaceful places, Finger Lickin' Records, Fabric in London, The Flaming Lips, The Artist's Way, Evil9 and the Intelligent Universe.

DJing in Japan

Q6. Why did you start to DJ? Tell me more about it!

A.
I have been a musician since I was about 7 years old and over time found myself wanting to control the music at parties and events more and more... so I guess it was a logical progression from that. I went to Dublin, Ireland, when I was a student as part of
my studies and got hooked on vinyl there. Over time I adapted my DJ style from playing solely vinyl to playing off a laptop with Ableton live. Live does just that. It allows me to Play tracks live, remix and edit, sample and improvise, while throwing in effects and having a great time.

Q7. Where do you usually go? Where can we find you?

A. Well, the easiest place to find me, probably, is out and about on a Saturday night, as I am usually DJing in Osaka. I enjoy places like Shinsaibashi where there is a groove happening. But I also love getting out of the city into nature, be it the mountains, the sea or just some open space.

Q8. What are your goals for future?

A. I would like to establish myself in the Osaka music scene as a respectable Musician, Producer and DJ, not only to the foreign collective but to a Japanese audience too. I would like to develop a regular gig in Tokyo as a DJ. I want to continue to work on breaking into the UK dance scene, with hopefully the eventual release of a full length album on my new label Big Floor Recordings. From an event management point of view, Zulu Samurai strive to bring a quality and an element of the unexpected to our events. We are building on a reputation of reliability and energy. I hope to bring out some exciting acts from the global music scene and throw down some great parties that leave people talking about it for weeks.

Q9. What else do you want to do in the future in Japan?

A. I would like to travel and see a lot of Japan, hopefully visiting many of the different islands that make up the country.

Q10. Message to WhyNot!? users!

A. Check out www.zulu-samurai.com Support events that are being held, get out of the house and see things. Meet people and try something new at least once a week. Spoil yourself now and again with something special. Do not be afraid to get involved.
