Face of the Month
::::No.20::::

Q1. What is your name?

A. Brad Crawford

Q2. Where are you originally from?

A. Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada (Prairie Boy)

Q3. How long have you been in Japan?

A. About 2 years

Q4. What are you into at the moment?

A. Movies, photography and music. I'm surprised and excited about current Hollywood offerings, Spiderman 3 of course, 300 whenever it comes to japan and others like Sunshine by Danny Boyle (28 days later) and Day Watch (Russian film). As for music I'm listening to a lot of Imogen Heap and The Mars Volta alongside Incubus' newest album.

Q5. What do you do in Japan?

A. I try to take as many photos as possible while searching out other artists be it video or photo or any other medium. Past projects include promotional videos for clubs and menus for cafes and bars. I'm currently preparing my second photo exhibition down in Shinsaibashi, as well I'm working on a short film alongside a great writer/actor by the name of Kevin Karn. Kevin and a good friend of mine, Rick Sanchez produced a short film here in Japan called Nylon, check it out if you can find it.

Artist in Japan

Q6. How did you manage to get your designing/editing offers?

A. Socializing. I have to say people like Mr.Matt Duffy aka DJ TripleBypass and the awesome people over at Slices cafe (Seng and Sone you guys rock!) really help get the network going. Its hard to hop into a foreign city as a young
artist and hope to be A: taken seriously and B: get actual work. Its all about making the right connections. That being said, I still have yet to meet many working artists here in Osaka.

Q7. Is it a big challenge for you to work as a designer/editor? Tell me about it.

A. Ya, its hard work. My full time job during the week eats away at my artistic time and like everyone else on the planet I'd rather devote all of my time to art instead of making money, but you gotta eat. Its also hard living outside of the city, designing and creating any kind of visuals takes a lot of back and forth communication and email just doesn't cut it, my phone bill goes up every month and without a solid group of peers you can trust for solid critiques its hard to constantly grade your own work.

Q8. Any funny/horrible stories about working in Japan?

A. Things that can go wrong, will. I've created full visual presentations for events just to show up and be told their projector is broken or it actually won't show up because its too dark in the venue. Its never really funny at the time, but you have to take it in stride, sh!t happens.

Q9. What are your goals for future?

A.@Produce an inordinate amount of work? Its always a goal i want to pursue: Create, create create. I want to get involved with other talented artists and try to collaborate and get some good shows together, i would really like to work alongside painters, be it classically trained or more graffitistyled individuals.

Q10. What is your favorite Japanese words?

A. One of the first i picked up when i arrived here: Chidoriashi. I have no idea if that even has Kanji.

Q11. Message to WhyNot!? users!

A. Hang out at Slices Cafe and you'll run into me at some point. Hopefully within the next month my photos will be gracing the walls of that establishment for your perusal. So i suggest you head on down grab a slice, maybe some bubble tea and we can talk shop. As i said I'm really interested in meeting other artists who are interested in working together even if its in Japanese, I'll try my best! Thanks for reading, look forward to meeting you in the future.
